How To Wire A Decora Light Switch: A Comprehensive Guide
Decora light switches, also known as rocker switches, are a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties. They offer a sleek and modern look, and they're easy to use. If you're planning to replace an old light switch with a Decora switch, or if you're adding a new light switch to your home, this guide will provide you with everything you need to know.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, you'll need to gather the following materials:
- Decora light switch
- Wire cutters
- Screwdriver
- Electrical tape
- Non-contact voltage tester
Step 2: Turn Off the Power
Before you do any work on the light switch, you need to turn off the power to the circuit that controls it. You can do this by flipping the appropriate circuit breaker to the "Off" position. If you're not sure which circuit controls the light switch, you can use a non-contact voltage tester to determine which circuit is live.
Step 3: Remove the Old Light Switch
Once the power is off, you can remove the old light switch. To do this, simply unscrew the two screws that hold the switch in place and pull the switch out of the wall. Be careful not to touch any of the wires behind the switch.
Step 4: Connect the Wires
Now it's time to connect the wires to the new Decora light switch. The wires that you need to connect are the hot wire, the neutral wire, and the ground wire. The hot wire is usually black, the neutral wire is usually white, and the ground wire is usually green or bare copper.
To connect the wires, simply strip the ends of the wires about 1/2 inch and then twist them together. Once the wires are twisted together, you can secure them with a wire nut. Repeat this process for all three wires.
Step 5: Install the New Decora Light Switch
Once the wires are connected, you can install the new Decora light switch. To do this, simply insert the switch into the wall and screw it in place. Be sure to tighten the screws snugly.
Step 6: Test the Light Switch
Once the light switch is installed, you can test it to make sure it's working properly. To do this, simply turn on the power to the circuit and flip the switch. The light should turn on and off when you flip the switch.
Step 7: Clean Up
Once you've tested the light switch and made sure it's working properly, you can clean up. This includes replacing the faceplate on the light switch and sweeping up any debris that may have been created during the installation process.
And that's it! You've now successfully wired a Decora light switch. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to consult with a qualified electrician.
